Hands in the Sand: An Experiential Exploration of Sandtray in Play Therapy
This 3-hour experiential invites participants to step out of theory and into practice through sandtray and role play. Grounded in Gestalt and Synergetic Play Therapy lenses, this session emphasizes embodied awareness, contact, and co-regulation in the sand as pathways to change. Rather than simply discussing technique, participants will experience it - building trays, engaging in role play, and processing their own reactions in real time. Come ready to be present, curious, and in the sand.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Apply Gestalt concepts of contact and awareness while constructing and processing a sandtray scene in play therapy.
Identify how Synergetic Play Therapy's emphasis on nervous system regulation and therapist self-awareness shows up during sandtray work in play therapy.
Practice using role play to deepen present-moment awareness and embodied understanding of a client's experience of the sand in play therapy
Reflect on personal reactions and countertransference that arise during experiential sandtray work, and connect this to clinical application with clients in the playroom.
